DIARY OF JOSEPH BERTRAM
1904-1932 (Not continuous)

The goal is to contribute to Joseph's history being accessible to all, now and in the future. Transcriber & contributed to Jennings County INGenweb by Lois Bertram Wapakoneta, OH - "It was a privilege to transcribe Joseph's Diary. Every effort was made to do it accurately."

Born and lived his entire life in Jennings Co., Indiana

These journals are a wonderful history of life in southern Indiana early 20th century.

He speaks of electricity and the telephone being installed, mail being delivered for the first time. The Great War was fought and he tells of parades and reports of casualties, also the 1918 Flu Pandemic that took friends and family as well as thousands of soldiers.

Picnics and socials at Four Corners Catholic Church and also Zion Baptist Church. He was Catholic and Bess was Baptist and yet they shared church interests. Hayden, Indiana was 'town' as they sold butter, took logs to mill, bought goods at Dodd's and caught the train at the B & O Depot.

Life was difficult and required hard work from everyone. You'll read how involved the children were in doing what was necessary for survival. Joe and Bess' parents, aunts, uncles and siblings were all necessary in their daily lives. Joe records births, death/burials, and marriages of family, friends and neighbors. He would sit up with a neighbor who was ill. He and Bess took in a family whose home burned to the ground. They were good neighbors.

Joe was very active in the community...belonging to many organizations, an active Democrat, auctioneer, ran for a county office and actively involved in church happenings. He and Bess were very social and would often have people for supper, go into N. Vernon for lectures at the school, Chautauqua was a favorite, Jennings Co. Fair where Joe would enter his livestock for competition, all part of their everyday lives.

What I've learned from reading all of Joe's journals is that their lives are really no different than ours today, even though it might be a different vocation...life is still pretty mundane in that we do the same things routinely and that occasionally something comes along to 'mark the day', however what I did see that was different was the sense of community. They were there for one another and actually cared as a community. Sad that we seem to have lost that.

It is a wonderful read, I hope you enjoy their lives. Lois Bertram

Note: The journals were difficult to read and I'm sure there are typing errors but their lives are all here, as best I could.
